EU Nations Next to Russia and Belarus Seek Increased Funding from Bloc

In a letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Charles Michel, President of the European Council, the four European countries bordering Belarus, Russia, or both expressed their deep understanding of what it means to be on the front line of EU borders, especially in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. They reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized the need to enhance defense initiatives within the EU and in coordination with NATO to bolster collective defense capabilities.

Stressing the importance of combining resources and efforts to protect their people and territories, the countries highlighted the critical role of NATO as the foundation of collective defense. They underscored their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s military endeavors and disclosed their significant investments in armed forces, defense production, and safeguarding borders with Russia and Belarus. Despite their ongoing initiatives, they acknowledged the necessity for further coordinated action.

The letter called attention to specific threats emanating from Russia and Belarus, such as the instrumentalization of migrants, sabotage, disinformation, and cyberattacks, all of which have implications for the broader EU. The missive was signed by heads of state and government including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, and Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina, who are strong advocates for Ukraine in the wake of the Russian aggression.

The appeal from Poland and the Baltic countries was timed ahead of the upcoming summit of EU leaders where discussions will revolve around delineating major responsibilities within the EU post the recent European elections. The agenda is also set to cover topics like the conflict between Israel and Hamas, defense industry financing, economic competitiveness, and the adoption of a strategic program for the next five years. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is slated to visit Brussels to finalize a security agreement with the EU and provide updates on the situation in Ukraine.
