In the EURO 2024 match between Croatia and Italy, Mattia Zaccagni became the hero for Italy with a 98th-minute goal that sent them into the Round of 16. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Luka Modric’s penalty, but Croatia responded with a goal of their own. Italy will now face Switzerland in Berlin after a surprising switch to a 3-5-2 formation.

The Azzurri needed a point to secure their spot as runners-up behind Spain. Mateo Retegui, Giacomo Raspadori, and Matteo Darmian all made appearances in the starting lineup. Croatia, on the other hand, kept their veteran midfield trio together and added Josko Gvardiol to left-back.

Despite Donnarumma’s phenomenal save on a shot from Croatia, they were unable to prevent Modric from scoring off the rebound. Italy continued to push for a goal, and finally found it when Zaccagni scored a beautiful curling shot reminiscent of Alessandro Del Piero’s iconic goal in the 2006 World Cup semi-final.

Italy’s victory over Croatia sets up an exciting match against Switzerland in the Round of 16. The game was a dramatic affair with both teams having their moments, but ultimately it was Italy who prevailed thanks to Zaccagni’s late heroics. The Azzurri will now look forward to their next challenge as they continue their EURO 2024 campaign.
