Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has shocked the world with his unexpected announcement that he is stepping back from his royal duties after 24 years on the throne. He has decided to hand over the throne to his eldest son, Prince Guillaume, who will assume his position in the autumn. The announcement was made on National Day, an annual event that brings together members of the Grand Ducal family, government officials, and members of parliament to celebrate the Grand Duke’s official birthday.

In his statement, Henri revealed that Prince Guillaume will become the Lieutenant-Representative in October, while he will retain his official title but be represented by his son. This change in leadership will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the monarchy in Luxembourg. The decision had been discussed for some time, as the Grand Duke expressed his desire to retire and pass on the responsibilities to his son.

Grand Duke Henri, the eldest son of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, officially became Head of State of Luxembourg in 2000. The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, responded to the news by stating that the Grand Duke’s abdication was the right choice at the right moment, as he is the symbolic figure of the nation. The transition of power to Prince Guillaume will likely take several years to complete, ushering in a new era for the monarchy in Luxembourg.
