Men’s Health Month is celebrated in June to raise awareness about the importance of men taking care of their health. James Williams Jr., a two-time prostate cancer survivor, shares his story to encourage men to prioritize their health and get regular screenings. At the age of 39, despite being in good shape and running marathons, Williams was urged by his late wife to get a prostate screening as part of his annual physical. His numbers were elevated, but after receiving conflicting advice from doctors, he finally found a specialist who diagnosed him with prostate cancer. Williams credits catching the disease early and receiving the right treatment for saving his life.

Williams now advocates for men aged 45 and older to get screened for prostate cancer, along with other important screenings such as colonoscopies, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Stuart Bell, a primary care doctor and medical director, emphasizes the importance of personalized care and shared decision-making when it comes to screenings. He recommends men to start getting prostate and colon screenings by the age of 45, or earlier if there is a family history of these diseases.

In addition to prostate and colon cancer screenings, Dr. Bell also mentions the importance of being aware of testicular cancer for younger men and lung cancer for smokers. Making informed decisions about screenings and maintaining regular check-ups can significantly impact men’s health and well-being. By promoting preventive care and early detection, Men’s Health Month aims to empower men to take charge of their health and lead healthier lives.
