Exploring JCC’s Zoo Technology Program

Students who are interested in joining Jefferson Community College’s Zoo Technology program have the opportunity to register for the fall semester now, or can fulfill prerequisites during the summer. Program Director Dr. Mark Irwin and Keirsten Chiodi recently appeared on 7 News at Noon to discuss the program and its benefits. Through this program, students receive hands-on experience and work alongside professionals in the field such as zookeepers, veterinarians, curators, educators, and administrators.

One of the highlights of this year’s program is the capstone project, where students will provide animal enrichment education and presentations to guests at Zoo New York’s season kickoff on May 4. The program focuses on developing technical expertise and scientific knowledge that zookeepers need in order to provide excellent animal care, educate the public, and participate in various programs at regional, national, and international levels.

Jefferson Community College’s Zoo Technology program is highly regarded and has produced graduates who have found jobs all over the country. Those looking to start the program in the fall are encouraged to register early, as prerequisites in Math and English are required and can be completed during the summer session. Special session classes begin on May 28, while early and full-session courses start on June 3.
