Face Recognition Technology Implemented at Denver International Airport Security Checkpoints

Denver International Airport is utilizing face recognition technology at security screenings. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects the 4th of July holiday week to be their busiest on record. On June 30, security workers screened over 86,000 people at the Denver International Airport, making it their fourth busiest day.

CBS Colorado’s First Alert Traffic Tracker Reporter Brian Sherrod toured the airport with TSA officials to showcase the technology being used to expedite the screening process. Face recognition machines scan government IDs for basic information such as name and age, revealing boarding information within 10 seconds. Denver International Airport is one of the first in the country to implement this technology.

Despite the advancements in technology, the TSA is still encountering common mistakes that can lead to delays. Examples include passengers not having their IDs readily available for inspection and carrying prohibited items in their bags. Lorie Dankers, a spokeswoman for TSA Colorado, stressed the importance of allowing ample time for the unexpected during the travel process to avoid feeling rushed or stressed.

During this busy travel period starting on June 28 and lasting until July 8, the TSA anticipates an average of 85,000 passengers per day at Denver International Airport. Travelers are advised to check their flight status before arriving and plan to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled flight to ensure a smooth travel experience.
