Dr. sc. Jasenka Grujić, a renowned gynecologist and obstetrician in Croatia, has been advocating for women’s right to freely choose and have access to all methods of abortion. After conducting extensive research and discovering that many hospitals in Croatia do not offer medical abortions or allow women to choose between medical and surgical options, Dr. Grujić advocates for women to have the right to a medical abortion in the privacy of their own home.
According to the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), a medical abortion for women up to 12 weeks pregnant should be performed in a hospital using two pills. However, Dr. Grujić insists that the second pill can be administered at home, as recommended by the WHO guidelines. She emphasizes that the process is supervised and monitored by a healthcare professional, ensuring that the woman receives the necessary care and attention.
Dr. Grujić points out that women undergoing a medical abortion at home would avoid the stigmatization they may face in a hospital setting, eliminating any judgment from medical professionals and preserving their privacy. She argues that this method would be less traumatic for the woman and calls on the medical profession to support women in this regard.
Despite the WHO’s recommendations, Dr. Grujić acknowledges that Croatia lags behind in providing medical abortion options, with some hospitals still not offering this choice to women. She stresses the importance of considering a woman’s condition and preferences when it comes to choosing the appropriate method of abortion.
Dr. Grujić also highlights the denial of abortion or contraception by a significant percentage of gynecologists in large Croatian university hospitals, emphasizing the need to combat this denial and ensure that women’s reproductive rights are protected.
