Cody Tyrrell, a cattle farmer in the Ubly Area, shared insights into farm life. He grew up working on the farm with his parents and five sisters. After attending Michigan State University for a few years, he decided to return to farming. Tyrrell expressed his lifelong passion for farming, mentioning that the draw of agriculture was present even as a young child.
As spring transitions into summer, Tyrrell’s primary focus is ensuring the health of the calves on his farm. The changing temperatures pose a challenge, with pneumonia being a significant risk. To address this concern, Tyrrell implemented a new vaccine program for the calves, although he anticipates it will be a few months before seeing the full results.
Tyrrell’s farm primarily raises beef cattle, having transitioned away from dairy cows over the years. The cattle are typically raised for 16-20 months before being ready for processing. In addition to cattle farming, Tyrrell’s family farm provides custom hay orders and other services for local farms, including collaborating with the Amish community.
Despite the farm’s expansion and changes in the family dynamic as Tyrrell’s siblings have moved away, he mentioned that labor shortage has been a significant challenge. Looking ahead, Tyrrell emphasized the need to reevaluate the custom work and services offered by the farm to efficiently manage operations. He highlights the importance of adapting to changing circumstances and seeking additional help to sustain and grow the farm successfully.
