Nineteen farmers markets in Virginia, including several in this area, have achieved gold status for implementing the best practices in the industry. The Virginia Farmers Market Association evaluates markets based on 10 standards related to food safety, affordability, public marketing, and local sourcing.
The markets in Blacksburg, Rocky Mount, and Salem received gold status for their adherence to these standards. The association stated that when consumers shop at a Virginia Certified Farmers Market, they can trust that the market is a safe, welcoming, and transparent source of local food. Certification not only assures shoppers of their safety but also signals to vendors that the market prioritizes promotion and outreach to new customers.
