Finalists from TN named for Presidential Math and Science Teaching Award

Four teachers from Tennessee have been named as finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. The awards, which are administered by the National Science Foundation for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, recognize educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The finalists from Tennessee are Cathy Cambron from Hickman Elementary School, Kelly Carey from Tusculum Elementary School, Lauren Fluharty from Discovery School, and Deborah Shuler from Poplar Grove Middle School. These teachers have been selected for their outstanding contributions to education and their dedication to helping students excel in math and science.

The awards are considered among the highest honors for K-12 STEM teachers in the nation. Winners will receive a $10,000 award, a presidential certificate, and will be invited to Washington, D.C. to join a cohort of other award-winning teachers. They will have the opportunity to influence STEM education on a state and national level.

A national selection committee will now consider the Tennessee finalists for the awards. Each state can have up to two winners, one in math and one in science. The winners will be chosen by a group of prominent mathematicians, scientists, researchers, district leaders, and classroom teachers.

Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds of the Tennessee Department of Education commended the finalists, praising them for their commitment to providing exceptional math and science education to prepare students for future success. The department encourages educators and community members to learn more about the awards and how to nominate teachers for future consideration at PAEMST.nsf.gov.
