Firefighter injured and at least 2 businesses suffer total losses in West Valley City strip mall fire

A 3-alarm strip mall fire in West Valley City resulted in a firefighter being injured and at least two businesses being declared total losses. The fire broke out at El Pollo Royo on 4616 S. 4000 West around 5:45 p.m., according to witnesses.

Omair Rehman, the owner of neighboring Lucky Mart, described seeing smoke coming out of the ceiling tiles and then flames in the ceiling when he went back inside his store. He quickly gathered his belongings and fled, as he had just opened his convenience store in September and was still struggling with the business.

West Valley City Fire Chief John Evans reported that everyone was able to escape the businesses safely. Two businesses were total losses, and 10 were evacuated and impacted in some way. The fire was already well into the roof by the time the first units arrived within four minutes of the call.

Initially, firefighters attempted to attack the fire from the roof, but it became too dangerous due to the roof sagging. A firefighter was injured during the incident but was transported to the hospital in good condition. The cause of the fire was still unknown as crews continued to battle the blaze late into Thursday night.

Rehman expressed sadness and shock over the incident but was grateful that everyone was safe and evacuated from the area. The community watched as first responders worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent further damage.
