The New York State Department of Health recently participated in Pride festivities across the state to reaffirm its commitment to LGBTQ+ communities, as stated in a press release dated July 3. Members of the DOH staff took part in Pride events in various locations, including the Capital Pride Parade in Albany for the first time. Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, expressed pride in the department’s dedication to health equity for the LGBTQ+ community.

The DOH had a presence at Pride events in Buffalo, as well as two events in Albany: Capital Region BIPOC Pride and Capital Pride 2024. They also attended Pride Night at the Plaza, with about 70 staff members and their families marching in the Capital Pride Parade. Dr. McDonald emphasized that the department’s commitment to protecting and promoting health and well-being for all communities is ongoing.

The DOH’s participation in these Pride events serves to educate the public on the importance of access to affirming care and supportive services for all communities without stigma. Moving forward, the department will continue its involvement in future Pride events, including the Rochester Pride Festival on July 20 and NYC Black Pride on Aug. 14-18. More information about the DOH’s efforts in health equity and human rights can be found on their website at https://health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/std/partner_services/index.htm.
