Floating Dock at Science North Decommissioned Due to Safety Concerns

By

Jun 2, 2024

The floating dock at Science North in Sudbury has reached the end of its serviceable life and is being decommissioned to make way for a new structure. Due to its unstable condition, the public is asked to refrain from using the dock until it is replaced. Science North has been the steward of the floating dock for over three decades, connecting visitors to the Jim Gordon Boardwalk.

In 2019, repairs were made to address flotation issues in the dock’s east section, but subsequent concerns led to an engineering assessment in 2023 that determined the dock needed to be replaced. Access to the dock has been temporarily closed, and plans are being finalized for a new structure to be installed by Spring 2025. An alternate walking route will be provided for visitors to access the boardwalk.

Unfortunately, the closure of the dock means that the William Ramsey Boat Cruise will not be able to dock at this location for the time being. Science North is exploring potential solutions and will provide updates as they become available. It is crucial for public safety that the decommissioned dock is not used, as it presents a significant safety risk.

Science North will provide updates on the removal of the current dock and project details on their social media channels. They thank the community for their patience and understanding during this transition period.
