Detroit Tigers television analyst Craig Monroe is the subject of an investigation by the Charlotte County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office following allegations made by a woman on social media. The woman claims that Monroe sexually abused her when she was a 12-year-old child and he was a minor-league player. The abuse allegedly began when Monroe stayed with her family during his time in the minor leagues, a common practice for players at lower levels. Although she initially deleted her post, she later reposted the accusations.
The woman, now 35 years old, spoke with WJBK-TV, Detroit’s FOX 2, providing disturbing details about the alleged abuse. Monroe, who worked on a freelance contract with the Tigers, has not appeared on a broadcast since June 9. Bally Sports Detroit removed him from a game on June 11 after learning of the accusations. Both the Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit released a joint statement expressing their awareness of the situation and noting that Monroe will not be on the broadcast schedule for the foreseeable future.
In response, Monroe denied the allegations through his attorney and expressed his intention to cooperate with law enforcement. He stated that he takes such allegations seriously and would never engage in or support such behavior. Monroe’s attorney mentioned that he and his family are shocked by the accusations and extend forgiveness and grace to his accuser.
Monroe, who is 47 years old, played in the majors from 2001-09 with several teams, including the Tigers, Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Minnesota Twins.
