Florida State advances in Men’s College World Series with dominant 7-3 victory over Virginia

Sunday featured an exciting day of baseball at the Men’s College World Series, with Virginia and Florida State facing off in a win-or-go-home game, and North Carolina and Tennessee battling for advancement. In a thrilling game, Florida State emerged victorious with a 7-3 win over Virginia after a strong performance.

Florida State took an early lead in the game, scoring first with a bases-loaded walk in the third inning, followed by a solo home run from left fielder Jaime Ferrer in the fourth. The Seminoles showcased their offensive prowess in the fifth inning when designated hitter Marco Dinges hit an RBI single, followed by Ferrer’s three-run home run, and shortstop Alex Lodise added another point with a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Despite Virginia mounting a comeback with two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth, Florida State’s solid defense and strong pitching closed out the game with a double play in the ninth inning. Pitcher Carson Dorsey delivered an outstanding performance for Florida State, striking out seven batters and keeping Virginia scoreless through six innings.

While Virginia’s Jay Woolfolk started well on the mound, he was pulled from the game in the fourth inning due to a knee injury sustained after Ferrer’s home run. Virginia’s defense showed moments of brilliance, including a run-saving catch from Harrison Didawick in the second inning. However, Ferrer’s dominant performance, highlighted by his two home runs, sealed the win for Florida State.

After the game, Ferrer expressed his joy at hitting two home runs on Father’s Day, especially with his father in the stands. Florida State will advance to play the loser of the North Carolina-Tennessee game on Tuesday, while Virginia’s loss eliminated them from the tournament.
