US President Joe Biden has strongly criticized the Supreme Court decision in Florida that bans abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy, calling it a barrier to essential medical care for women in the state and across the South. He expressed outrage at the decision, which was recently cleared by Florida’s highest court and is set to come into effect in 30 days.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued the ban on abortions after the sixth week in April 2023, a significant reduction from the current allowance up to the 15th week of pregnancy. Biden criticized the new rule, pointing out that it would restrict access to abortion at a point when many women may not even be aware they are pregnant.

In addition to tightening abortion rights, the Florida Supreme Court also approved a measure for a vote on abortion rights in November. This would potentially add an amendment to the state constitution guaranteeing the right to abortion, amid a nationwide push to restrict or ban the procedure following the controversial US Supreme Court decision in June 2022 to overturn the landmark ruling Roe v. Wade.

The cultural and political battle over abortion continues to intensify in the US, with conservatives pushing for restrictions while polls show a majority of Americans support continued access to safe abortions. President Biden and his Democrat party are emphasizing their commitment to abortion rights as they seek to win the upcoming presidential election and appeal to female voters.
