Nouvel Catholic and Valley Lutheran emerged as winners in the first round of district football, setting up their third face-off of the season. Nouvel defeated Montrose, 7-1, while Valley Lutheran shut out Laker High School, 4-0. The two teams will meet again in the Division 4 district semi-finals at Valley Lutheran on Tuesday at 5pm.
In Nouvel’s victory, Lydia Jacobs scored five of the team’s seven goals, bringing her season total to 35 in 17 games. Emily Rosenberg also contributed two goals, bringing her tally to 30 for the season. Valley Lutheran defeated Laker to improve their record to 12-2-3. During the regular season, Nouvel and Valley Lutheran played to a 3-1 victory for Nouvel and a 1-1 draw.
The Saginaw area football playoffs also featured other games, including Heritage’s loss of 2-1 to Traverse City Central in Division 1 and Midland Dow’s 2-1 win over Traverse City West in Division 2. Mount Pleasant shut out Petoskey with a score of 1-0. In Division 3, Unionville Sevewain defeated Birch, and Caro defeated Marlett. Brock Creek beat Gladwin, and Alma advanced with a 1-0 win over Clare. However, Sheppard lost 7-0 to Big Rapids.
In baseball news, Freeland swept Shepard in a doubleheader without conference play on Thursday. Luke McLaren won the first game, and Ryan Quackenbush won the second game with a five-inning shutout. Sanford Meridian also won two non-conference games against Coleman, with Ethan Wetzel and Robbie Edwards making significant contributions.
