John Hendrickson, who spent 28 years at Perrigo, a global pharmaceutical and consumer selfcare company, has been appointed as the new chair of University of Michigan Health-West’s board of directors. He will be taking over from Steve Van Andel, who has been on the hospital’s board for almost four decades.

Dr. Ronald Grifka, president of UM Health-West, praised Van Andel for his outstanding leadership and steadfast presence during transformative periods in the institution’s history. Grifka expressed gratitude for Van Andel’s decades of service and extensive contributions, adding that his forward-thinking approach will be valuable for future initiatives. Van Andel will remain on the board in an emeritus position.

In addition to his role on the UM Health-West board, Van Andel is also vice chair of the U-M Health Regional Board of Directors. Last fall, he joined the regional board when Sparrow Health System integrated with the University of Michigan Health Network. The regional board oversees the strategic direction and governance of UM Health-West and UM Health-Sparrow hospitals in West Michigan and the Lansing area.

Bruce Courtade, a lawyer at Rhoades McKee, has been appointed as the new vice chair of the board. Grifka expressed excitement for the leadership and guidance that both Hendrickson and Courtade will provide as the hospital continues to collaborate with University of Michigan Health to expand access to world-class health care in West Michigan.
