Former University of Nebraska baseball player Cade Povich achieves MLB debut

A former Husker pitcher, Cade Povich, made his MLB debut on Thursday afternoon for the Baltimore Orioles against the Toronto Blue Jays. Povich had spent three seasons in the Minor Leagues after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2021, before being traded to Baltimore in 2022.

Hailing from Bellevue, Nebraska, Povich had impressive stats this spring at Triple-A Norfolk, with a 5-1 record in 11 starts, a 3.18 ERA, and 75 strikeouts in 56.2 innings. In his debut, Povich pitched 5.1 innings, facing 25 batters, and recording two strikeouts. He gave up five hits, four walks, and six runs, including a three-run home run by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the third inning.

Although Povich surrendered one run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, he managed to shut out the Blue Jays in the fifth inning. The Orioles staged a comeback, scoring four runs in the last two innings, but ultimately fell short with a 6-5 loss to Toronto.

Povich becomes the 41st Nebraska baseball player to reach the Major Leagues and the third to do so this season, following Spencer Schwellenbach and Trenton Brooks who debuted in late May. For ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, follow @CornhuskersWire on X and like our page on Facebook.
