In our annual survey of Fortune 500 CEOs, it is interesting to note that despite the general pessimism surrounding the economy, these CEOs appear optimistic. Only 28% believe the U.S. economy will go into recession within the next year, and nearly 70% think the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates before the end of 2024. This suggests that they have confidence in policymakers’ ability to combat inflation. Additionally, less than one in five CEOs foresee reducing headcount in their companies this year.

While AI is a major focus for these CEOs, only 22% are concerned about its disruptive effects. Instead, many of them seem to admire AI and its advancements. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, is the most admired by this group, particularly for his leadership in generative AI. When asked about the stocks they would most like to own personally, Microsoft and Nvidia, a leader in AI-chip technology, were at the top of the list.

The survey was conducted from April 18-28, 2024. For more insights and stories that have made a lasting impact on business and culture, subscribe to the Fortune Archives newsletter.
