Four businesses in the upstate region of South Carolina were awarded grants from the SC Department of Agriculture

The Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship, part of the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, recently awarded $200,000 in grants to 12 businesses across the state as part of its advanced entrepreneurship program. Among the recipients, four are based in the Upstate region.

Blue Ridge Rabbit Meat Co. in Wellford is a family-run rabbit farm that raises and processes rabbits. With the ACRE funding, they plan to add heating and cooling systems to their barn. Farm in the Wildwood in Greenville County utilizes ecofriendly agricultural methods to grow baby greens, herbs, and various vegetables. The ACRE funds will be used for facility improvements, marketing, and expanding product offerings.

The Pickled Pepper People, based in Greenville County, specializes in spicy slaw made from fresh, locally sourced vegetables using a traditional Haitian family recipe. This minority-owned business will use the grant money for equipment, marketing, social media, and shared kitchen expenses. Lastly, Growing Green Family Farms in Greenville County supplies fresh produce to the Upstate region.

According to ACRE Executive Director Kyle Player, the program is impressed by the creativity, drive, and diversity of the entrepreneurs who compete for the grants. In addition to the financial support, each awardee will receive access to a network of business advisors and professional assistance with state and federal grant applications.
