FPP technology enhances the durability of composite tanks in industrial settings

Cevotec GmbH, based in Munich, Germany, is showcasing its next generation of Samba Pro layup systems, which specialize in fiber patch placement (FPP). The company highlights the Samba Pro PV-1 system as the first FPP layup system designed specifically for the industrial reinforcement of composite tanks. Through dome reinforcements and optimized filament winding, pressure vessel OEMs can save 15% of fiber material and related costs while achieving equivalent mechanical properties. The Samba Pro PV-1 system enables dome reinforcements on composite tanks on an industrial scale with optimal layup quality, all in a fully automated process.

Cevotec successfully validated the dome reinforcement solution in an industry project in collaboration with Roth Composite Machinery, Cikoni, and an undisclosed tank manufacturer. At the event, the Cevotec team is displaying a cutout of one of the project vessels, showcasing the first reinforcement layer. Dr. Dimitrios Sikoutris, a technical expert at Cevotec, will present the project results, technical background, and industrial application in the conference presentation titled “Composite tanks innovation: 15% weight reduction by using dome reinforcements in an industrial process” on Wednesday, September 11th from 1:30 – 2:25 p.m. Visitors can also schedule meetings for a live estimation of the cost savings potential for their specific vessels.

In addition to composite tank reinforcement, Cevotec is catering to high-performance composite aerostructures with FPP layup features for multi-material components. Custom functionalities such as post-placement push, push and hold, and accentuated 3D placement are introduced to facilitate precise placement of difficult-to-handle materials on complex shapes, enabling direct 3D layup with accurate fiber orientation. Cevotec states that FPP is ideal for cases where AFP layup systems face challenges in terms of geometric complexity, material handling, or laminate requirements.

The Cevotec team, which includes co-founder and CEO Thorsten Gröne, Dr. Dimitrios Sikoutris, sales manager Anil Mertal, and marketing manager Susanne Häckel, will be present at the booth throughout the event alongside their partner, American GFM.
