During Tuesday’s game between the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Aberdeen IronBirds, Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was at the plate for a combined no-hitter. The game started with Dakota Hawkins pitching the first five innings before being relieved by Joey Lancellotti for one inning and Joshua Cornielly for three innings. Alvarez caught all nine innings, a task he was eager to do before rejoining the major league team.
In his first rehab start with High-A Brooklyn, Alvarez went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk. Prior to that, he had played three games with Double-A Binghamton, going 2-for-8 with a home run and a walk. Despite hopes of Alvarez reuniting with the Mets this week, manager Carlos Mendoza stated that Alvarez will remain in the minors to get regular at-bats while the team travels to London for a two-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend.
Mendoza did mention that if Alvarez continues to progress well, he could potentially rejoin the Mets next week. The young catcher’s performance in the minor leagues will play a significant role in determining when he will return to the major league team.
