A science teacher at Frontier Academy is in need of the community’s support as he prepares for surgery to remove cancer from his body. Elaine Romero, wife of Louie Riojas, who is known as “Mr. Real House” by his students at Frontier Academy in Greeley, has started a fundraiser to help with medical expenses.

Riojas was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes in his neck. Despite the tough news, a PET scan in March showed that the cancer had not spread further. Results from another PET scan completed on May 15 are still pending, but regardless of the outcome, Riojas will be facing a long road to recovery.

Due to the cancer in his tonsils and neck lymph nodes, Riojas will need to undergo surgery. Romero noted that her husband has remained positive, but the diagnosis has taken a toll on him both physically and mentally. He has had to take a break from teaching science at Frontier Academy, a job he loves, to focus on his recovery.

While Riojas’ friends, family, and community at Frontier Academy have been supportive, they are seeking assistance to cover medical expenses, as well as costs for gas, food, and lodging during the surgery in Highlands Ranch. Romero expressed gratitude for any funds raised to support their family during this challenging time.

As of Wednesday morning, the fundraiser has received 84 donations and raised over $6,000 towards a $10,000 goal. In addition to financial help, Romero encourages loved ones and community members to leave words of encouragement, support, or prayers on the fundraiser page.
