A radar-confirmed tornado touched down near Sunbright on Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Although no injuries were reported by Wartburg Police Chief Michael Cox, several businesses, including Schubert Funeral Home, suffered significant damage from the tornado.

The owner of Schubert Funeral Home, Billy Glen Kennedy, described receiving a call from a friend informing him that the funeral home in Sunbright was destroyed. Kennedy immediately drove to the location and was shocked by the extent of the damage. He mentioned that there was little wind or rain at his home just four miles away when the tornado hit.

Kennedy, who has worked at the funeral home for 40 years and owned it for the last 11 years, expressed gratitude that no one was hurt. While the damage is devastating, he acknowledged that material things can be replaced and emphasized the importance of safety above all else.

Following the tornado, Kennedy received an outpouring of support from friends and the Sunbright community. He acknowledged the tight-knit nature of the small community and expressed his thanks for the support received during this challenging time.

As the funeral home works to recover and assess the extent of the damage, Kennedy mentioned that services will continue in Wartburg until the Sunbright location is able to reopen. He asked for continued prayers and support as they navigate the aftermath of the tornado.
