Gen Z’s resistance to a corrupt political elite

More than 20 demonstrators in Kenya were shot dead during tax protests, prompting the government to eventually give in to the demands. The demonstrations, which started on social media as a response to new taxes, escalated quickly with tens of thousands of people, mainly young, taking to the streets across the country. The government initially sent in the military but later withdrew the tax package in response to the protests. Despite the concessions, demonstrators continue to demand accountability and change.

The protests in Kenya are not just about taxes but also about an entire generation’s anger towards corrupt politicians who care more about personal gain than the well-being of the country. Many of the protesters are educated and from the middle class, unable to find jobs due to economic instability and government corruption. They see themselves as patriots fighting for a functioning state that prioritizes the needs of its citizens over personal wealth and entitlements. This new generation of protesters is harder to manipulate and is more determined to bring about meaningful change.

With a median age of under 20, Kenya’s population is predominantly young and increasingly frustrated with the state of governance in the country. The protests in Kenya could have ripple effects in other African countries where similar issues of corruption, unemployment, and political elitism persist. The youth in many African nations are becoming more vocal and organized in demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders. As the protests in Kenya show, this new generation is fearless, determined, and willing to fight for a better future for themselves and their countries.
