Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the firing of an army commander via a video message on Monday. He stated that Lieutenant General Yuri Sodol would be replaced by Brigadier General Andriy Hnatov as the commander of the Unified Ukrainian Armed Forces. However, Zelensky did not provide a specific reason for the dismissal.
Reports from Ukrainian media suggested that Bohdan Krotevych, a leader of the far-right Azov Battalion, had filed a complaint against Sodol, accusing him of negligence that led to significant losses. Krotevych claimed that Sodol’s actions had resulted in more Ukrainian soldier casualties than any Russian general. The parliament in Kiev had also previously expressed criticism of Sodol for allegedly failing to adequately prepare Ukrainian soldiers for missions, including those in the Kharkiv region.
Ukraine has been engaged in defending itself against a Russian invasion for over two years. Zelensky has made several changes in leadership within the Ukrainian army in response to setbacks in military operations. Following a failed counter-offensive in the summer of 2023, Russian troops continued to advance in the eastern and southern regions of the country without encountering significant resistance.
In early May, the Russian army launched a ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, capturing multiple towns before being halted by reinforcements from Kiev. The Ukrainian army has faced challenges such as slow mobilization leading to a shortage of recruits and delayed delivery of Western aid supplies causing a shortage of weapons.
