German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Thursday to discuss post-war reconstruction efforts and show support after Russian attacks on key Ukrainian infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in its fight for freedom, stating that it was a fight for values that define Europe. Germany recently announced sending an additional Patriot air defence system to Ukraine in response to pleas from Kyiv for urgent assistance to counter Russian attacks.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged fellow EU leaders to follow Germany’s lead and provide more air defence systems to Ukraine. Habeck, along with a business delegation, is set to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian officials to discuss emergency aid, business ties, and preparations for the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin. The German economy ministry highlighted the need for comprehensive support for Ukraine, including resilient energy supply and reconstruction efforts that require private sector investment.
In addition to the visit, German defense giant Rheinmetall has announced plans to build an ammunition plant in Lithuania and set up at least four factories in Ukraine to support the country’s defense against the Russian invasion. The World Bank has estimated that the total cost of reconstruction in Ukraine, more than two years after the war began, is at least $486 billion. The international community’s support and solidarity with Ukraine remain crucial in the country’s efforts to recover and rebuild after the devastating conflict.
