Following a key mistake in the previous game and struggles at the plate, New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres found himself on the bench for Wednesday’s game against the Mets. Instead, Oswaldo Cabrera will be taking over Torres’ position at second base for the day. Torres has been hitting just .215/.294/.333 with seven home runs in 80 games during the 2024 season, a significant drop from his previous performance. His recent stats, with a slash line of .108/.222/.324 over the last two weeks, have been particularly concerning.
Torres attributed his failure to run out a ground ball to groin discomfort, which may have influenced the decision to bench him. Manager Aaron Boone expressed the need for Torres to improve his performance during a challenging stretch for the team. The Yankees currently hold a record of 52-29, leading the American League East by two games despite recent struggles. The team is missing key players like Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton due to injuries.
The Mets, on the other hand, boast the best record in June with a 14-6 record. The Yankees will need to regroup and find ways to overcome their recent setbacks to maintain their position at the top of the division.
