Google AI now enables Gemini to create and summarize content in Gmail, Drive, and beyond

Google has introduced Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides by adding a new side panel. This panel allows users to request tasks like summarizing, analyzing, and generating content using data from emails and documents without having to switch between applications or tabs. The company is leveraging its most powerful models, including the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, to drive this AI integration.

The integration of Gemini AI into Google services aims to streamline workflows for users of Gmail, Drive, Documents, Sheets, and Slides. A new side panel will appear on the right side of the screen when users click the star-shaped button labeled ‘Ask Gemini’. From this panel, users can access various AI tools within Google Workspace applications to enhance their productivity.

For instance, in Gmail, users can utilize AI to summarize email threads, receive writing suggestions for responses or new emails, and ask questions to search for specific information within their inbox. The function of summarizing emails with Gemini AI is available on both the web version and mobile application of Gmail. Other AI tools, such as contextual smart responses and question-and-answer features, will be available for the mobile app soon.

In Docs, Gemini AI can assist in generating content, summarizing information, and sparking new ideas. It also helps in creating content based on existing files. Similarly, in Slides, Gemini can aid in creating slides, generating custom images for presentations, and summarizing document content.

For Sheets, the AI offers options for organizing data, tracking information, creating tables, generating formulas, and providing task guidance. In Drive, users can benefit from Gemini AI’s ability to summarize single or multiple documents, extract brief data from saved files, and conduct in-depth research on a topic without extensive searching.

While Gemini capabilities are gradually rolling out to all users of Google Workspace services, it’s crucial to note that access to these AI features requires a Gemini subscription. Users must have Google Workspace paired with Gemini Business or Enterprise, Gemini Education or Education Premium, or be Google One AI Premium subscribers to unlock these advanced functionalities.
