Grand Rapids considers building a soccer stadium to elevate local sports and events

A potential partnership between ASM Global and the West Michigan Sports Commission is in the works to bring a soccer stadium to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission, mentioned that there are ideas for a soccer complex or a soccer stadium. He stated that both are necessary and the conversation about the project dates back to a grand action study that was conducted.

The study highlighted the need for a professional soccer team, a soccer stadium, as well as adult and youth amateur complexes to enhance the destination and attract more visitors to the area. Guswiler emphasized that bringing a professional soccer team to the town would not only draw more people but also create more events. The funding for the project would come from visitor tax money generated through the Kent Campaign to raise the lodging tax by 3% in Kent County.

Guswiler mentioned that the soccer stadium could serve more than just soccer matches when there are no games. It could be used for various events and activities to further enhance the destination and entertainment options in Grand Rapids. The proposed facility would be a valuable addition to the area’s sports and entertainment landscape, catering to both local residents and visitors.
