Republican Congressman Greg Murphy from eastern North Carolina, who is also a physician, revealed in a statement on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with a pituitary macroadenoma, which is a tumor at the base of his skull. Although the tumor is believed to be non-cancerous, its size and potential to impact vital brain structures have led Murphy to schedule surgery for its removal.
The statement did not specify a date for the surgery or its location, but it mentioned that the prognosis is excellent. Concern and well wishes for a quick recovery poured in from people across the political spectrum in response to Murphy’s announcement. In the November election, Murphy will face opposition from a libertarian candidate, as no Democrat filed to run in the district, which was set up to ensure a victory for the Republicans.
