Grigalashvili claims third World Title at Judo World Championships

Day three of the 2024 Abu Dhabi World Judo Championships brought together some of the best judo talents from around the world. The event promised to deliver an exciting showcase of skill and athleticism, with many top judo athletes in attendance. One of the highlights of the day was a meeting between IJF President Marius Vizer and children from the French High School of Dubai, where they discussed the impact of judo on society.

In the -63kg category, there was a surprise as two-time junior World Champion Joanne VAN LIESHOUT made it to the final. She faced off against Angelika SZYMANSKA who had dominated the field with her sharp groundwork skills and efficient submissions. In a tightly contested final, it was VAN LIESHOUT who emerged victorious, securing her first senior world title with a well-timed Uchi-mata-sukashi counter.

Another standout performer on day three was 20-year-old Timur ARBUZOV, who reached the final of the tournament after defeating a number of world-class fighters. In the -81kg category, reigning two-time World Champion Tato GRIGALASHVILI put on a strong defense of his title, aiming for a third consecutive win. In a close and physical final, GRIGALASHVILI seized an opportunity and executed an Ura-nage to secure his third world title in a row, becoming the first Georgian to achieve such a feat.

The medals were awarded by IOC Member Balazs FÜRJES and OCA Vice President Otabek UMAROV, respectively. Following his victory, GRIGALASHVILI dedicated his win to his family, expressing his happiness and gratitude for their support. The third day of the Abu Dhabi World Judo Championships showcased the incredible talent and dedication of the competing athletes, making for an exciting and memorable event.
