Guy Strong, a Kentucky sports legend, honored by community

Guy Strong, a legendary basketball figure in Kentucky, passed away at an advanced age, leaving behind a legacy that basketball fans will not forget. His time on the court at the University of Kentucky was just the beginning of a storied career. Strong transferred to Eastern Kentucky University after winning a National Championship under Adolph Rupp in 1951. He served in the Korean War from 1952-54 before returning to Eastern and helping the team win the 1955 conference championship.

Strong’s coaching skills were remarkable, earning him admiration across the Commonwealth. Described as a player’s coach, he knew exactly how to lead his team to victory. He won the NCAA Division Two Championship at Kentucky Wesleyan in 1966, led EKU to the OVC title in 1973, and guided Clark County to three Sweet 16 appearances in 1986, 1989, and 1990. Strong’s impact on the basketball community was immense, and his contributions were recognized with inductions into the Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame.

Karl Park, who worked closely with Strong during his time at EKU, fondly remembers his dedication and attention to detail on the court. Strong’s coaching prowess and passion for the game left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of working with him. EKU Athletics Hall of Fame acknowledges his significant role in the success of their basketball program and expresses gratitude for his contributions. The loss of Guy Strong is a profound one for the basketball community in Kentucky, and his legacy will continue to inspire players and coaches for years to come.
