‘Hawaii takes a stand against overcrowding: Famous ‘Stairway to Heaven’ set for demolition as it remains off limits to thrill seekers’

One of Hawaii’s most beautiful hiking trails, known as the Stairway to Heaven, is set to be demolished at the end of this month. The trail, featuring 3,922 steps, has attracted daredevils from around the world, despite being prohibited for decades. Originally constructed by US Marines in World War II to provide easier access to a communications station in the Ko’olau Mountains, the wooden stairs were later replaced by steel ones. However, in 1987, the Haiku Stairs were closed due to the dangerous nature of the course.

Despite the closure, tourists have continued to attempt the hike, often sneaking in before dawn to avoid the guard posted at the entrance. Many ignore the prohibition signs and risk a $1,000 fine to get the perfect selfie for social media. Tragically, in 2012, a man died after suffering a heart attack during a climb, and several others have been injured in recent years. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has confirmed unanimously approved plans to remove the stairs, with work set to begin this month.

The decision to demolish the Stairway to Heaven comes after years of defiance from tourists and influencers seeking the perfect photo op, despite the dangers and legal prohibitions. Despite the risks and warnings, many continue to access the trail, risking fines and injury to capture images for their social media accounts. The closure and removal of the stairs mark the end of an era for one of Hawaii’s most iconic and controversial hiking paths.
