The Douglas County Health Department and City of Omaha’s Stormwater Division have issued a warning about a harmful algal bloom at Candlewood Reservoir in west Omaha. Samples taken from the reservoir showed total microcystin levels above the recommended threshold of eight parts per billion.

As a precaution, the public is urged not to swim in the reservoir while the alert is in effect. Recreational fishing and boating are still allowed, but residents are advised to be cautious and avoid any contact with the water that could potentially lead to swallowing it.

Pet owners are also reminded to keep their pets out of the water and prevent them from drinking from the lake to avoid any potential harm from the algal bloom.

It is important to take these precautions for the safety and well-being of the community.
