The Ottawa Department of Public Health (ODPH) in Ottawa County, Michigan, has released the findings of the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The purpose of the CHNA is to collect data from various research studies every three years and assess the health status of the county. Over 1,500 adults were interviewed for the assessment, including community members, health experts, and more.
According to ODPH, Ottawa County ranks among the top in the U.S. for quality of life and longevity. Positive aspects highlighted in the assessment include high rates of health insurance coverage, a decrease in obesity rates, and an increase in mammograms among women over 40. However, there are also concerning trends identified in the assessment.
Issues identified in the assessment include mental health concerns, challenges with healthcare access, worsening chronic diseases, and increased worries about childcare and housing affordability and accessibility. The assessment also noted increases in cannabis use, vaping, and binge drinking among residents.
Dr. Jack R. Roossien Jr., MD, emphasized the importance of the data in the report as a reflection of the health of Ottawa County residents. The findings will be used to prioritize health needs, develop strategies, support public health policies, and educate residents on disease prevention.
