Health officials report West Nile virus cases in Clark County

Health officials in Clark County have reported two cases of individuals who have recovered from West Nile virus. The cases involved a man over the age of 60 and another man over the age of 70. One had a non-neuroinvasive form of the virus, while the other had the neuroinvasive form. Both individuals have successfully recovered from the illness.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, there has been a high level of mosquito activity reported this season. As of June 21, 2024, there have been 230 mosquito pools that tested positive for West Nile virus in various ZIP codes. Additionally, nine mosquito pools tested positive for the virus that causes St. Louis encephalitis.

To prevent further cases of West Nile virus, health officials are encouraging residents to take precautions. This includes eliminating any standing water where mosquitoes can breed, such as in small containers that collect rain or irrigation water. It is also recommended to use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and report any mosquito activity to the Health District’s surveillance program.

If individuals come across standing water or notice mosquito activity in their area, they are urged to report it to their local code enforcement agency. By taking these preventative measures, residents can help reduce the spread of West Nile virus and protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses.
