Hewett and Reid clinch their fifth French Open doubles championship

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid have secured their fifth consecutive victory in the men’s wheelchair doubles final at the French Open, adding to their impressive record of 20 Grand Slam doubles wins. The top-seeded British duo defeated the second-seeded Japanese pair, Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda, with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-4 on court 14 at Roland Garros. In their semi-final, Hewett and Reid had to come from behind to defeat Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina and Stephane Houdet of France.

Hewett and Reid quickly established control in the final match by breaking serve in the first game and securing additional breaks in the fifth and seventh games to win the first set within just 26 minutes. Despite facing resistance from Miki and Oda in the second set, the British pair managed to secure the decisive break in the sixth game to claim victory. This win marks their fifth consecutive title at the French Open, adding to their previous successes at the US Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open.

Following their triumph in Paris, Hewett and Reid expressed their excitement for the upcoming Paralympics in September where they will once again team up to compete. Despite the challenges they faced during the final against tough opponents, the duo remains optimistic about their future performances and the potential for more competitive battles ahead. Meanwhile, Andy Lapthorne of Britain and Guy Sasson of Israel faced disappointment in the men’s quad wheelchair doubles final, where they were defeated by the top-seeded Dutch pairing of Sam Schroder and Niels Vink with a score of 7-6 (11-9), 6-1.
