Alfie Hewett, a decorated wheelchair tennis player from Britain, has achieved success with eight Grand Slam wheelchair singles titles. Despite his impressive track record, Hewett’s hopes for a fourth French Open men’s wheelchair singles title were dashed in the semi-finals by Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina. The defeat came in a hard-fought match that ended 7-5 6-7 (1-7) 6-2.
The 26-year-old Hewett, who previously clinched the title at Roland Garros in 2017, 2020, and 2021, now looks to the wheelchair men’s doubles competition for a chance at victory. Teaming up with fellow Briton Gordon Reid, the duo has reached the semi-finals and is eyeing their fifth consecutive Roland Garros title since 2020. Their opponents in the upcoming round will be Fernandez and Frenchman Stephane Houdet.
On the women’s side, Britain’s Lucy Shuker and her Colombian partner Angelica Bernal were eliminated in the women’s wheelchair doubles quarter-finals. The pair faced a tough defeat with a score of 6-3 7-5 against top seeds Yui Kamiji of Japan and Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa. Despite the setback, the competitors have shown resilience and will continue to strive for success in future tournaments.
