A historic building in Boise’s North End is undergoing a transformation to become a new self-serve dog wash called The Hydrant. The former AAA Sign building is being repurposed by owner Rod Adams, who purchased the building with sentimental value as it was originally started as AAA Sign Company by his great uncle Paul Ashley in 2020.
The renovation of the building required significant time and effort to bring it up to standard for hosting a business. The project included a complete HVAC overhaul, reorienting the staircase, and updating the electrical, drywall, and plumbing systems. Despite the labor-intensive process, Adams was committed to preserving the historic building and maintaining its original aesthetics.
The Hydrant will offer seven dog wash tubs with dryers on the ground floor, along with a separate drying room for dogs with long hair and a grooming room in the back. Adams, a dog lover himself, noticed the lack of self-service dog wash options in the North End and saw an opportunity to provide a convenient and clean space for dog owners to bond with their pets.
The goal is to open The Hydrant in early July at 1210 W Sherman St. in Boise. Adams hopes to create a welcoming environment for dog owners to enjoy quality time with their furry friends while avoiding the hassle of washing dogs at home. The Hydrant aims to offer a unique and innovative service to the community and provide a new lease on life for the historic building.
