Honeywell’s hydrocracking technology can be used to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biomass, making SAF that is less carbon-intensive than traditional fossil-based jet fuels. Their Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Unicracking™ technology extracts liquids and waxes from processed biomass, such as crop leftovers, wood waste, or food scraps, to create SAF that meets aviation industry standards with a lower environmental impact. This innovation aligns with Honeywell’s commitment to the energy transition megatrend.
As the demand for SAF increases, the aviation industry faces challenges due to limited traditional SAF feedstocks like vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste oils. By integrating the Fischer-Tropsch process with their new technology, Honeywell widens the feedstock options available to the industry, utilizing more abundant sources to enhance SAF production capabilities. DG Fuels recently selected Honeywell’s FT Unicracking technology for their biofuels facility in Louisiana, which will be the largest in the world for producing SAF from the FT process, generating 13,000 barrels per day of SAF starting in 2028.
Through the use of Honeywell’s advanced technology, DG Fuels will supply enough fuel for over 30,000 transatlantic flights annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions from global air travel. This development supports the airline industry’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050.
