How Anne Hathaway fell out of favor with the world

Mar 27, 2024

Humans tend to be suspicious of perfection. When we can’t easily find flaws in someone, we tend to invent some ourselves just to be cautious. This was the case for actress Anne Hathaway about ten years ago when she faced an onslaught of criticism during the press tour for her new film Mothers’ Instinct. Looking back, she reflects on the barrage of hostility, both online and offline, that derailed her career in the 2010s.

During that time, Hollywood was in a precarious state with movements like #MeToo and #OscarsSoWhite gaining traction. Hathaway faced vague accusations that varied depending on who you asked. One moment she was deemed too enthusiastic, earnest, and humble, while the next she was labeled as inauthentic, entitled, and insincere. She was criticized for being both an Oscar-winning star in Les Misérables and a millennial version of Julia Roberts in lighter films like Valentine’s Day and Bride Wars, which led her to miss out on job opportunities.

Hathaway opened up about how her online persona had become toxic and how it affected her career. Despite the negative publicity, she credits Christopher Nolan for being supportive during a low point in her career by casting her in Interstellar. She expressed gratitude for his belief in her talent and not being swayed by the negative press surrounding her.
