As the heat arrives in southeast Texas and across much of the US, the impact on our bodies is clear. However, the effects of heat on mental health may be less obvious. Experts warn that as weather becomes more extreme, climate anxiety is becoming more common. The high temperatures can also lead to isolation for those who are sensitive to heat during the summer months. Additionally, the heat can affect behavior, causing irritability and anxiety to increase.

Therapist Alejandra Galindo from Thriveworks in Houston explained that the heat naturally increases body temperature, which can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety. This can lead to increased irritability and anxiety, especially when temperatures rise outside. Galindo recommended avoiding social media or websites that can increase anxiety, a phenomenon known as “doom scrolling.” In order to combat the negative impacts of heat on mental health, she suggested staying connected with friends, prioritizing positive thoughts, and taking steps to manage anxiety.
