How Finnish funds have reduced their investments in Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä, an industrial company, has seen a significant increase in its stock performance in recent months, making it the best-performing stock among large companies. The share price has risen by 79 percent in the past year, starting the upward trend in autumn 2022. The company has benefited from a strong market situation, with an increase in order intake. Its energy solutions, particularly multi-fuel engines, have been effective in reducing emissions.

Finland’s largest fund companies have repatriated Wärtsilä’s profits in recent months, with Nordic funds selling shares for 20 million euros and OP Fund Company funds selling for 15.5 million euros. Institutional investors often trade shares of companies that provide equipment and services to industry, leading to fluctuating stock prices. In the spring, Wärtsilä has been most lightened among Finnish institutional investors, with the Swedish Literature Society selling shares for a total of about 40 million euros in three months.

Foreign institutions have been increasing their stake in Wärtsilä continuously since the fall of 2022, coinciding with the company’s strong share price rise. British management company Liontrust bought a 0.5 percent stake for over 68 million euros in April and increased its stake to 0.66 percent. Household ownership of Wärtsilä has decreased from 23.2 percent to 21.0 percent between June 2022 and May 2024, according to owner distribution statistics compiled on Wärtsilä’s investor page.
