Hungary takes on the presidency of the European Union rotation

Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a prominent figure in the international nationalist right, began its rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) with the motto “Let’s make Europe great again”. The presidency was handed over from Belgium to Hungary on Monday, with Orbán emphasizing the importance of strengthening European competitiveness during his term.

The central objective of the Hungarian EU presidency is to sign a new European pact for competitiveness by the end of the presidency on December 31st. In addition to competitiveness, the Hungarian government is focusing on common defense, defense of external borders, expansion of the EU, promoting cohesion and agricultural policies, and addressing demographic challenges.

Orbán’s administration also aims to enhance integration processes in Western Balkan countries and deepen relations with China. However, given that EU foreign policy decisions require a unanimous vote, intensifying ties with Beijing may face challenges. The provocative slogan chosen for the Hungarian presidency, “Let’s make Europe great again”, has drawn criticism from political opponents for its similarity to former US President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan.

In a bold move, Orbán announced the formation of a new right-wing nationalist and Eurosceptic group called Patriots for Europe in the European Parliament. This new political family includes parties from Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic, with plans to expand to other countries. The Portuguese Chega party has expressed interest in joining the group, which would increase its representation in the European Parliament.

Orbán’s presidency of the EU and the formation of the new political group signal a shift towards nationalist and Eurosceptic sentiments in European politics, raising concerns among some EU member states and political observers.
