Immigrants found to be voting illegally in US study

A study released at the beginning of May by the US research institute Just Facts revealed that between 10% and 27% of adult immigrants living in the United States, legally or illegally, are currently registered at the country’s polling stations to vote in federal elections irregularly. The study used updated data and an improved methodology compared to an article on the same topic published in 2014 by the magazine Electoral Studies.

The Just Facts study analyzed US Census data on immigrants released in 2022, which recorded the existence of 19.7 million immigrants over the age of 18 living in the country. The institute estimates, through a survey conducted for the study, that between 2 million and 5 million of these immigrants are illegally registered at voting stations in American states.

The study pointed out that approximately half of immigrants who register illegally tend to appear at electoral colleges to try to vote, especially in presidential elections. Just Facts stated that if nothing is done, between 1 million and 2.7 million of these immigrants could end up casting their votes irregularly in the upcoming elections.

The study highlighted the potential impact of these irregular votes, as polls indicate that the vast majority of immigrants tend to support Democratic Party candidates. The study also mentioned that there are loopholes in the electoral system that allow immigrants to register and vote without proving their citizenship.

Just Facts noted that Republicans in the US Congress have proposed a bill to require states to request effective proof of citizenship from all individuals registering to vote, but media outlets and some Democrats have opposed such actions. The institute emphasized the need for stronger measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral system and prevent irregular voting by immigrants.

In conclusion, the study by Just Facts raises concerns about the irregular voting practices of immigrants in the United States and the potential impact on election outcomes. The institute calls for greater scrutiny and measures to address this issue and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
