Dr. Deepak Chopra, a 76-year-old alternative medicine practitioner and chief health officer at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, emphasizes the importance of a healthy morning routine. Chopra spends about two and a half hours every morning for his routine to set the tone for the day.
Chopra has two key steps in his morning routine: meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises and a few cups of coffee. He starts his day with these activities and practices body and breath awareness by asking how to have the most enjoyable day. When his wife wakes up, he meditates with her.
Chopra enjoys drinking coffee and consumes two to three cups before noon. He says that coffee has benefits like reducing five types of cancer and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Although the correlation between coffee and reducing the risk of cancer overall or with specific types of cancer is unknown, studies show a lower risk of death from all causes.
After the routine, Chopra heads to the park with his wife around 9:30 am for about two hours of walking. They walk at least 10,000 steps and usually cover 5 to 10 miles. They go to ethnic neighborhoods to enjoy sensory experiences of colors, flavors, and people.
Overall, Chopra’s morning routine emphasizes the importance of healthy habits like meditation, yoga, exercise, and diverse food consumption for a better lifestyle.
