In 2023, Cyberattack Attempts Decrease by 80% but Become More Sophisticated and Varied

Argentina experienced 2,000 million cyberattack attempts in 2023, as reported by FortiGuard Labs, Fortinet’s threat intelligence and analysis laboratory. The data comes from detection systems such as firewalls and antivirus that the cybersecurity company has in place, representing an 80% reduction compared to 2022. However, experts caution that this decrease should not necessarily be seen as good news. The lower number of attacks is indicative of a global trend where attackers are focusing on more targeted, sophisticated exploits and new variants of malware and ransomware.

As the threat landscape continues to expand, attackers are exploiting a wider range of devices connected to the internet, increasing the risk of cyberattacks for users. These numbers serve as a barometer for the evolving threat environment, highlighting the need for organizations to integrate cybersecurity defenses that are automated, updated, and effective at detecting and mitigating intrusions.

Despite the overall decline in cyberattacks, specific cases in Argentina illustrate the ongoing cybersecurity challenges faced by both public and private entities. From ransomware attacks on major energy providers and financial institutions to disruptive cyber incidents targeting critical infrastructure and regulatory agencies, the country has been at the forefront of cybersecurity incidents in recent years.

Fortinet’s report underscores the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures, emphasizing the need for organizations to incorporate cybersecurity into their business strategies. By deploying integrated, automated security solutions that leverage AI technologies, businesses can enhance their resilience against evolving cyber threats and safeguard their critical assets and data from malicious actors.

While the cybersecurity landscape remains complex and dynamic, the insights provided by Fortinet’s telemetry offer valuable guidance for organizations seeking to enhance their cybersecurity posture and protect against emerging threats in an increasingly interconnected world.
