Analysis results of a double grave in Austria recently revealed that the two sets of remains were not a husband and wife, as previously believed, but actually a mother and child pair who lived during Roman times. Centuries ago, two individuals were buried hand in hand on top of a horse in a tomb located in Austria, sparking archaeologists to initially think they were a couple from the Middle Ages. However, new analysis of the remains confirmed that the mother and child pair died approximately 1,800 years ago during Roman times. Sylvia Kirchengast, a professor of evolutionary anthropology at the University of Vienna, noted that this discovery marks the first mother and daughter burial in Roman Austria that has been proven through genetics.
The skeletons, along with a horse, were unearthed in 2004 from a cemetery in the ancient Roman city of Ovilava, now known as Wels in Upper Austria. The burial included two gold pendants in the shape of a wheel and a crescent moon. Initial analysis dated the tomb to the 6th to 7th century based on its depth and orientation. Further examination through carbon dating, ancient DNA analysis, and visual inspection revealed that the two individuals lived around the year 200 during the dominance of the Roman Empire in the region. Both skeletons were determined to be female, with DNA testing confirming a first-degree biological relationship between them, indicating they were likely mother and daughter.
Despite initial beliefs that the individuals were sisters, due to their age difference and other factors, the research team concluded that they were indeed a mother and daughter pair. The presence of a horse and gold pendants suggested that the women held high social status and were likely part of the Celtic civilization that existed under Roman rule. It was common for Celtic people to bury horses with their owners, and there were additional signs indicating the deceased individuals had a close relationship with horses.
